Master Sergeant Jay R. Mattice honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1992 to 2013, building a career marked by combat deployments, embassy security, and specialized training roles. An Infantry Marine by trade, he served across multiple occupational specialties including Mortarman, Reconnaissance Marine, and Infantry Unit Leader, while also earning designations as a Martial Arts Instructor-Trainer, Assault Climber, and Navy Dive School graduate. His career included counter drug operations in California (JTF-6), combat operations in Iraq during OIF I, counter-piracy missions off the Horn of Africa, and service with Marine Security Guard detachments in Rome and Mexico City. Mattice’s leadership extended into advanced instruction roles with the Special Operations Training Group and the Jungle Warfare Training Center, where he trained Marines in survival, mountaineering, and close-quarters battle tactics. His military service earned him numerous personal and unit awards, including the Combat Action Ribbon and a Meritorious Service Medal which solidified his reputation as both a warrior and an instructor capable of preparing others for the most demanding environments.
Following his retirement, Mattice continued his service in law enforcement with the Arlington County Police Department, where he became a member of the Arlington County SWAT Team and served as an Operator and Sniper. At the end of his career with Arlington, Mattice was assigned to the Tactical Training Unit, where he played a pivotal role in preparing officers for critical incidents. His instruction focused on active violence response, patrol tactics, defensive tactics, and firearms proficiency, ensuring the department maintained a high level of operational readiness. Drawing on decades of real-world experience, he dedicated himself to ensuring officers were prepared to respond with precision and confidence under pressure. Today, Jay is recognized not only for his operational experience but also for his lasting contributions to training and mentoring the next generation of protectors.
